Holehonnur: A distressing incident in Jambaraghatta village near Holehonnur has resulted in the death of a 55-year-old woman, identified as Geethamma, after she was subjected to severe physical abuse in the name of exorcism. A 45-year-old woman named Asha, from the same village, allegedly used a stick to beat Geethamma, claiming she was driving out a possessing spirit.
Geethamma had been unwell for some days, leading her son, Sanju, to believe she was possessed. He summoned Asha, who was believed to have divine powers and could exorcise spirits. A viral video circulating on social media shows Geethamma sitting on the ground while a woman relentlessly beats her with a stick on her head and body. Despite Geethamma’s pleas for water due to her weakened state, the woman refused to provide it. The assault reportedly continued from 9:30 PM until 1:00 AM.

District Superintendent of Police, Mithun Kumar, confirmed that Geethamma succumbed to the continuous beating. The accused, Asha, has been arrested in connection with the incident. A case has been registered at the Holehonnur police station, and further investigation is underway. This tragic event highlights the dangers of superstitious practices and the exploitation of vulnerable individuals.
